Poetry composed in praise of the Ahl al-Bayt (as) and their Du‘at often embodies these meanings of Im’an – uniting speech, conviction, and practice. The 9th Shi’i Fatimi Ismaili Imam, known as al-Shakhs al-Fadil Sahib al-Rasa’il, Al Imam Ahmad al-Mastur (as), explained that the sounds emitted by a living being are of two kinds:
(i) Those that carry meaning, and (ii) those that do not. Meaning is conveyed through letters and words, which form sentences, and through these sentences human beings communicate what lies within their hearts. Allah has bestowed upon humanity the faculty of hearing:
The ear receives sound waves and transmits them to the brain – the seat of al-Aql.
